...Factory, there is a sinister and aggressive undercurrent in the video. Fergie, a recovered meth addict, says she turned to drugs in part because of the pressures of being a child actress. Is this trippy video a subtle jibe at the exploitation of the young stars of Nickelodeon and Disney channel shows? ...careless pastiche of gaudiness and “history” in these homes is quite disturbing. It is likely a bad sign that our wealthiest citizens are ensconcing themselves in Disney versions of feudal manor homes. As income disparities continue to widen, one wonders if these houses might become even more fantastic. (As of yet, few have moats, but plenty of subdivisions are gated to keep out the lower orders...

...fact, Mary Poppins is not just a big, eye-pleasing production; it's Disney's most endearing, human-scaled and emotionally satisfying musical yet. The familiar Sherman Brothers score has been updated with seven new tunes (by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe), which blend in seamlessly--in some cases, even better than that, since they're more integral to character and plot, like Mary's sprightly, perfectly apropos opening number, Practically Perfect. The show strikes a nice balance between stage dazzle--avant-garde choreographer Matthew Bourne brings statues to life and defies gravity in more ways than one--and dramatic...
