...Disney isn't alone. Rival moguls at Warner and Paramount Pictures have begun preaching their own cost-containment messages. The reasons are as simple as a friendly ghost, an ingenuous hooker and an eight-year-old hero. The three top- grossing films of 1990 -- Ghost, Pretty Woman and Home Alone -- cost a relative pittance to produce and were driven by syrupy, uplifting stories rather than star power. ...that we didn't get around to...We actually had something called "Bambo," for a minute, which was: they killed his mother and now it's time to get even. And we made a little postcard that we gave away at a book convention in Las Vegas. But the Disney lawyers got a hold of the postcard and suggested that this book might have a very fast injunction on it if we included "Bambo," so that project kind of went away...

That is the working name of a tourist attraction being planned by Sony Corp., the owner since 1989 of Columbia Pictures Entertainment. The proposed Sonyland would be a direct challenge to the theme parks of the Walt Disney Co. and MCA's Universal Studios, which serve their owners not only as profit producers but as persuasive corporate advertising as well. Sonyland will feature the products of its parent company and its motion-picture subsidiary. The opening date, location and specific amusements of Sonyland remain a mystery.
