...work, perhaps inspired by the clear, bright light of Southern California (on its non-smog-gy days). The result, if not so divergent from similar work in the New York orbit as the Californians like to think, nevertheless offers a wide cornucopia of shapes, colors and visual sensations that display genuine individuality and vitality (see color pages). > Craig Kauffman, 36, studied architecture at the University of Southern California, went on to get a master's degree in painting at U.C.L.A. Tiring of abstract expressionism, he tried painting on Plexiglas, got the idea of doing rectangular wall pieces when vacuum...
...near-flawless display of precision rocketry, the U.S. last week added two formidable new weapons systems to its nuclear arsenal. The Navy's fleet ballistic missile Poseidon and the Air Force's powerful Minuteman III ICBM, both on their maiden tests, winged like homing pigeons to their targets from two launching areas at Cape Kennedy. Their dual success was remarkable, but what distinguished the solid-fuel missiles even more was their potential. Each is designed to carry Multiple Individually-Targetable Re-entry Vehicles (MIRV), comprising as many as ten separate nuclear warheads ticketed for preselected targets...
...most rock singers sound like so many caterwauling cats conjugating the verb "to be," Nilsson, 25, sings with clear honesty and lack of pretense. He has composed a highly creative rock-vaudeville show with all the acts: a tap number, a cowboy ballad, a torch song, and an acrobatic display of vocal jazz scatting. Altogether an excellent performance despite an overlying, oddly out-of-place air of melancholy that sometimes threatens to spoil...

There is acid rock by such groups as the Quicksilver Messenger Service and Mother Earth. There are shots of long-haired nymphets looking stoned, solemn interviews with cops, doctors, and headshrinkers about the dangers of drugs, and interminable expositions of hippie philosophy by unbathed gurus. Apparently for the benefit of grind-house voyeurs, there is also some totally nude choreography-filtered through eye-blasting psychedelic lighting-danced...
...Shida, a bumbling, unsuccessful shopkeeper, and Mr. Ali, a progressive, flourishing entrepreneur. Mr. Shida, for example; is in serious trouble because his debtors are slow to pay him. Mr. Ali, by contrast, avoids that kind of bind by shrewdly refusing to give credit. A typical lesson deals with the display of merchandise in shop windows: "One of these cakes has flies on it. The other cake is safe under glass. Which would you buy, A or B?" There are even a few words on how to knock the competition. If other shopkeepers find that Mr. Shida is selling potatoes...
