...Wall Street Journal described the payback rescheduling as "a major international rescue operation," the move actually had little to do with benevolence. For its role in the "rescue," the U.S. got an agreement from Mexico to quadruple exports to America by next summer. Mexico has also agreed to disregard future oil price guidelines drafted by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Thus, under the prevailing Supreme Court standard, he had to prove that the Post had printed its story "with knowledge that it was false, or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not." But the jury apparently concluded that however non-reckless the internal review procedures may have been, the Post's aggressive, go-get-'em style of newspaper journalism was itself reckless. That conclusion may not survive Judge Gasch's expected review...
