...would like to express my respect for Allison Kent '99 and commend her courage for her letter "Mentally Ill Students Marginalized and Trivialized" (Oct. 12). Ultimately, since the children alone do not provide enough compelling material, we look to the adults, but they remain stuck in a formula of hemming and hawing over the kids, whether for or against their existence. A late outburst by Ruth about her friends' disrespect of her seems almost an afterthought, and the wrap-up scene, new baby included and old babies rejuvenated, is played with such a smooth resolution, such a return to levity, that we feel vaguely cheated...

Clinton's questionable character is rooted in his blended conception of right and wrong. Granted, the scandals have entitled themselves to the exaggerative tendencies of the Republican Congress, but to the extent that they continue to reflect a fundamental disrespect for the offices of our government, they must resonate with an America whose traditional optimism has been based upon the integrity of its citizens and its government...
