With less porking in the House, more military bases could have been closed. Ironically, after the military gave up its opposition, much of the dissent against defense cuts came from Democrats who had crusaded for cuts for years. Politicians should be able to foresee the contradictions that arise when they leave the party line aside to vote for their constituents' wishes; votes should be consistent. It's hypocrisy to vote for defense cuts one year, and then scream and yell for show as your comrades close the base in your backyard...
...Paradise of the Blind is not laden with heavy and vengeful political criticism. In fact, people who have regarded her works simply as vehicles for political dissent disappoint Duong. She has written a novel of disillusionment--not only with the corruption and ironies of the Communist Party and society, but also disillusionment with the strength of blood ties so embryonic to Vietnamese culture, with childhood on the poverty-stricken outskirts of Hanoi, with women's sacrifices, and with life. They explain away people who hold views different from their own by attributing to such backward folk the all-purpose motivation of Hate...
This is not to say Powell's visit should go unmarred by dissent. It is incumbent upon students who disagree with Powell to express their displeasure. But what must be avoided is the large-scale auditory disruption that was visited upon former President Bush when he spoke at the University of Michigan in 1991. Whistleblowing and chanting with the intent of drowning out the speaker is not behavior commensurate with the status that is being extended to the Class of 1993. Rather, it is the mark of a band of extremists whose arguments are so devoid of merit that they...
