...NEED IT--HERE'S HOW, an article discusses women's rights abuses around the world and questions the adequacy of U.S. foreign policy to eliminate such injustices. To those unschooled in the universe of women's magazines, Glamour may conjure up a pure lipstick-and-trysts image not dissimilar from that of its competitor Cosmopolitan. The truth is, the publications are quite different because Cosmo is the sort of magazine in which the words foreign and policy would never make a joint appearance, save perhaps in a piece on how to pick up sultans of small Arab countries or graying...
...rather dissimilar playing styles of the two pianists mark the greatest difference in personality between the two concerts. Rubalcaba possesses extraordinary virtuosity, and his technical facility is very evident throughout his performance. With his cascading solo lines and fluid, rapid-fire outbursts of notes, he seems extroverted almost to the point of brashness. His linear, lyrical sensibility and use of stylistic devices like tremolo octaves are very reminiscent of McCoy Tyner. But Rubalcaba's lines are even longer, and his touch more commanding, than that of John Coltrane's former pianist. Rubalcaba's improvisations are heavily patterned and rhythmically defined...
...Doubleday Dell Publishing Group, alleging the novel was too similar to her copyrighted book "Defending the Devil: My Story as Ted Bundy's Last Lawyer." A U.S. district court dismissed the case before it went to trial after an "exhaustive examination of both books" showed them to be substantially dissimilar. The decision was affirmed by the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington...
...pathetic, caricatured roles not worthy of a fraction of their talent. Davis, a brilliant actress, is wasted as the strung-out, borderline-psychotic ex who comes to Harry's apartment looking for retribution. In Allen's 1992 Husbands and Wives, she delivered a devastatingly accurate performance in a not dissimilar role; here, she may as well be Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Alley's character is similarly distorted, creating a disturbing (and aggravating) trend for the film. Why won't Allen let us get close to the characters? It's this closeness that made so many of his other films work...
...simple perfection. "I knew that the how-to would be my niche," she says. Adds her friend, dealmaker Ronald Perelman, the Revlon mogul: "I put her right up there as one of the most dynamic entrepreneurs around. She's created a company and product around a life-style not dissimilar to Ralph Lauren's in fashion...
