While that seems a distant prospect, al-Wazir's funeral did have the momentary effect of unifying the fractured Palestinian community in mourning. Almost every faction was represented at the burial, and the graveside frenzy was dignified by the presence of such Palestinian leaders as Farouk Kadoumi, Nayef Hawatmey and George Habash. But the turnout could not mask the absence of one man: Arafat. As his closest friend was being lowered into the ground, Arafat was in Libya talking to Muammar Gaddafi...
Upon the teacher's effort hinges the fate of the whole town. For in the distant past, an evil aristocrat put the town under a spell that, ever since, has rendered everyone in the town both mindless and unable to love. The only way the spell can be broken is if either a member of the Zubrisky family marries someone of the aristocrat's line, or if someone can educate Sophia. If the teacher fails to do so within 24 hours, the age-old curse will strike the promising intellectual as dumb and loveless as his pupil...
Maybe the general Boston area is still too distant for Bok. Does an ethical education include concern for the community right outside Harvard--that is, the 90,000 residents of Cambridge? American Jews should not be cowed and embarrassed by Israel's statehood, but should help it through this time of trouble by promoting a political solution. Palestinians should take this opportunity to clearly state their aims and aspirations, not to pump bleeding heart liberals for a little sympathy...
...contact with a range of people, among them Maxine Waters, the California assemblywoman; California Assembly Speaker Willie Brown, his official campaign chairman and a strong but quiet influence; and former Carter Budget Director Bert Lance. But a few current inner-circle members may soon be advising Jackson from more distant orbits. In the wake of the Michigan primary, some prominent blacks in the campaign, Brown among them, are agitating for a more significant role. They want higher-profile positions so that when the inevitable brokering takes place, they will have assigned seats at the table...
