The main complaint seems to be that the novice is forced to compete with veterans of two or three years of high school Spanish and therefore placed at a distinct disadvantage at the outset. To atone for the "simplicity" of the language, assignments are rather long and a large vocabulary must be acquired early. Furthermore, because this course is usually taken as a means of passing the language requirement, it tends to attract apathetic students and therefore lacks much of the interest of advanced courses...
