...history of the House. Rule 238 of Cannon's Precedents states that it "is the custom of the House to defer final action against members under criminal charges pending disposition in the court of last resort." Thus, even if the powers of exclusion and expulsion were not maintained distinct -- giving Congress dangerously broad discretionary power -- the treatment of Powell, if based on his legal troubles in New York, remains unjustified. His libel case is still under appeal...
...Common Market: because it "is not Continental, remains involved with the seas beyond" and "is tied to the United States by all sort of special accords." De Gaulle feels that the British see themselves as a world power rather than as a European power-and would therefore pose a distinct threat to France's current dominance of the Common Market. Letting the British in, he said, would force "the Continentals to renounce forever the making of a Europe that would be European...
...generally agreed that the activities of the groups supported by the CIA were distinct from its hard-core intelligence functions and from major field operations-although occasionally the lines were blurred. The degree of outright CIA influence varied widely. In the case of the National Student Association-which has made the fullest disclosures-the influence was considerable. It is no surprise that by the last reel there is a distinct air of defeat about Casino Royale, as if the money ($12 million) and the time (134 minutes) had run out. The final footage shows the U.S. cavalry riding to Bond's rescue, joined shortly by American Indians parachuting from planes and shouting "Geronimo!", the French Foreign Legion...
Laurence Senelick's directing captured the play's tone and succeeded in making this light black comedy touching as well as funny. The sparingly used shock effects and sight gags, the sharp blocking, the distinct footwork which marks each character, the special lighting for climactic moments, combined to give the show a stagey, super-charged quality. The cast included two of the best character actors in Cambridge, Marilyn Pitzele and Senelick himself. They cleverly made their characters a little larger than life, a little histrionic, rather than strictly realistic...
