...Hollywood used to corral the kiddies at Saturday matinees. But, first of all, those unpedigreed items today outshine much of the solemn epics produced in the '30s and '40s. And second, the five chosen films of 2008 were all examples of a different kind of genre: the nobility-in-distress art-house drama. Until debris from the missing aircraft began to surface on June 6, Air France Flight 447 and its 228 passengers and crew seemed to have vanished into thin air. There were no last-minute distress calls from the cockpit; just 24 automatic satellite messages--some indicating major system failures - relayed from the stricken plane to Air France maintenance headquarters. ...situation was so bleak that according to Russian media, people in Pikalyovo were forced to eat wild plants, while the city's hot water was shut off after residents couldn't pay their bills. When Putin came in to save the day, he saw p.r. potential in Pikalyovo's distress. During a nationally televised meeting in the town, the Prime Minister scolded local officials and factory owners, including billionaire tycoon Oleg Deripaska, a onetime Kremlin favorite whose investment company Basic Element owns the town's BaselCement factory.
