...shock, but not a surprise, to see Owen Wilson in The Darjeeling Limited, the new semi-comedy from Wes Anderson that had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last night. As Francis, the eldest of the three Whitman brothers, he's clearly in physical distress. His head is wrapped in two thick bandages, one horizontal, one vertical, as if to keep his brains from seeping out. The nose Wilson's fans know to be charmingly broken has a Band Aid on it. His right hand and wrist are taped, and he uses a cane to walk...
...Both films end with powerful visual statements: a montage of real people killed in Iraq, the raising of an American flag upside down, as a traditional distress signal to other nations. We need help, these wrenching films say, when we can no longer help ourselves...
...Expect to make less money - maybe a 15% to 20% return - but without that much less work. With a pre-foreclosure sale, your job is to convince the homeowner to make a deal for the house. Just keep in mind that this is a person who is in financial distress and likely swamped by other opportunists like you, not to mention attorneys and real estate agents, knocking at the door. Due diligence is just as important as when buying at auction, since a homeowner can hide unsavory details like the condition of the house, liens or unpaid taxes...

One focal point has been residential advisors (RAs), the older students or junior faculty members who live in dorms alongside students. The University of Nebraska at Lincoln has been implementing a policy where a mental health professional is placed as a live-in member of every dorm on campus. In addition, RAs are trained...
Patty and Grace are nobody's damsels in distress, but this is not a "TV discovers strong women" story. TV has had no shortage of female cops and young babes with superpowers (see NBC's Bionic Woman, this fall). Rather, TV has found women leads who are strong but also weak, like Dahlia Malloy (Minnie Driver) of FX's The Riches, a drug addict and ex-con (and current con artist). Or criminal but charming, like Mary-Louise Parker's pot-dealing widow in Showtime's suburban dramedy Weeds. Or sympathetic but scary, like Courteney Cox's rapacious gossip-magazine...
