...alleged Iraq connection makes the case especially troublesome on RJR's home turf. To circumvent economic sanctions against Iraq, the lawsuit alleges, RJR used a former employee, who had become a cigarette distributor in Cyprus, to guide its Winstons and Aspens (the top-selling brand in Iraq) to Baghdad. There, Saddam's son Uday, 38, collected "taxes" on them. The trade is so lucrative, the E.U. alleges, that the Iraqi government allows the Kurdish Workers' Party--considered by the U.S. to be a terrorist organization and by Iraq to be a threat to the regime--to deal in cigarettes...

Bland bishops, older priests turning a blind eye to drug lords, churchly displeasure with the film's most heroic figure--a people's padre--are shown with cool objectivity. Exit polls in Mexico found that 70% of audiences approved of the movie...

At MGM, 007's financier and U.S. distributor, vice chairman Chris McGurk insists that "everything is really mutual in terms of approvals," but the studio's only contractual power is to green-light (or not) a film. All else, from script to cast to crew...

...Thailand, a country not known to be coy about sexual matters. Officials are not objecting to the dance moves or what looks to be an orgy but to a pair of posters in the background written in Thai that refer to the country's sex industry. The Thai distributor for Aguilera's music label has decided not to air the video on local stations. Chances are, the effort by Thai officials to deny Thailand's reputation as a haven for libertine adventures should prove less of a problem for Aguilera than for Thailand's tourism industry...
