...last cappuccino machine. These are indeed dark days for the Mountain View, Calif., start-up. The company whose trailblazing browser jump-started the World Wide Web back in 1994 was supposed to become the fastest hot rod on the Infobahn. Instead, Bill Gates sideswiped it into a ditch and left AOL to strip the wreck for parts: a browser, a website and a treasure chest of software. How well AOL exploits its new toys will determine whether its latest mantra, "AOL Everywhere," looks prescient or ironic a few dozen business cycles down the road...
...from being a jingoistic and humiliating display, the "Gong Show" was a last-ditch but nonetheless humorous attempt to draw attention to the situation. Rage has never been what this band is about, but it's not impossible to claim that Cake has settled down a little with this album...
...Wolfe portrays it, handles this problem a lot differently. Fareek is a fairly typical contemporary phenomenon, a loutish, sullen, spoiled athlete wearing diamond ear studs and, Roger observes, "a gold chain so chunky you could have used it to pull an Isuzu pickup out of a red clay ditch." Fareek is also a local Atlanta boy who climbed to fame from a poor black neighborhood. And he has now been accused, though not yet formally charged, of date rape by the daughter of one of Atlanta's most powerful white businessmen, Inman Armholster, who happens to be Charlie Croker...
