With only the three-meter dive and the 400-yard freestyle relay left in the match, the Crimson held a precarious 49-48 lead over the Midshipmen. Navy was a slight favorite to win the relay, so a Harvard sweep of the three-meter dive was crucial to their chances. Murphy, a two-time all-E.I.S.L. selection, won as expected; but it was sophomore Dick Eisenberg's fine diving for a second place, after having finished third in the one-meter diving, that clinched Harvard's victory...

Borman has been air-oriented from youth, when he built model airplanes and sold newspapers to pay for flying lessons. A West Pointer who opted for the Air Force, he earned a master's degree in aeronautical engineering from Caltech, broke an eardrum during a practice dive-bombing run and for a while was certain that he could never again take to the air-let alone fly to the moon.
