...about, Crick did not mince words. 'We,' he announced exultantly, 'have discovered the secret of life!' Brave words?and in a sense, incredibly true ... On that late winter day in 1953, the two unknown scientists had finally worked out the double-helical shape of deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA. IN DNA'S FAMED SPIRAL-STAIRCASE STRUCTURE ARE HIDDEN THE MYSTERIES OF HEREDITY, OF GROWTH, OF DISEASE AND AGING ... As the basic ingredient of the genes in the cells of all living organisms, DNA is truly the master molecule of life. [The discovery] was one of the great events in science, comparable...

...Balkan wars broke out, is on the front lines of the cloning wars. He helped clone mammals at the University of Munich before going to Britain. Now, using a technique similar to one recently demonstrated in South Korea, he plans to create embryos by injecting a patient's DNA into an egg from which the genetic material has been removed. He then hopes to harvest the embryonic stem cells--which can develop into almost any organ--and coax them to produce insulin in diabetics. Stem cells may also hold promise for victims of Parkinson's and heart disease. Controversy...

When the first two cars from Toyota's new Scion brand came out, they raised questions about whether the automaker's DNA had been lost in translation. The bean-shaped xA and especially the boxy xB begged for attention; these were not your buttoned-down Camrys. Of course, that was the idea. Scion is the budget nameplate Toyota launched last summer to lure Gen Y drivers to showrooms, and it's getting the job done. The median age of Scion buyers is an industry-low 35 (Toyota buyers overall push 48), and 75% are new to the Toyota family...

...death of FRANCIS CRICK deprives the world of a remarkable scientist and conversationalist whose forceful voice and overpowering laugh made him the focal point of any room that he chose to occupy. From the morning of Feb. 28, 1953, when he and I discovered the double-helical structure of DNA--and showed that the secret of life was a large molecule--he held court over the new field of research that this discovery unleashed. Exuding an Edwardian elegance of logic as well as dress, he instantly brought to mind the good-natured arrogance of Henry Higgins in George Bernard Shaw...
