There Stern finds himself pitted against just about everything, from his do-it-yourself bumbling to the anti-Semite neighbor who knocks down his wife and calls his son a "kike". Author Friedman lets fact blend with fantasy to make Stern at once laughable and very sad both real and wry. Friedman, 34, has a promising talent if it doesn't get trapped by too much sameness of subject. His recent second novel, A Mother's Kisses (TIME, Sept. 4), a caricature of the child-devouring Yiddisher Mama, was funnier than Stern, but a good bit safer...
Russians First. Though the Russians were the first commercial makers of plywood (they began packing tea in plywood boxes in the 1870s), American manufacturers have long since grabbed the world-production lead. The growing do-it-yourself market absorbs 8% of their output, and industrial uses account for another 15%, but half of the nation's plywood now goes into housing. By aggressive promotion, self-imposed quality control and imaginative research to develop new uses for plywood, the industry has boosted the amount built into the average new home from...
Proud Heritage. It was a do-it-yourself resurrection. Rejecting Legge's death sentence, Philharmonia members enlisted a sympathetic lawyer to help them over the legal shoals (even their name was owned by Legge), reorganized as a cooperative. By scrambling for TV concerts and recording engagements, the New Philharmonia has managed to stay solvent by a semiquaver, even manages to provide its members with 25 hours of work a week, about as much as they averaged in the old days...
Manhattan's Doctors Hospital, a fashionable stork pad for East Side society, was dismayed. But West Side Story Star Carol Lawrence, 30, was determined. After taking a $40 stamina-building course in what its fans these days call "educated childbirth," she wanted that "do-it-yourself feeling." So she did it and felt it, and two weeks after 7-lb. 9-oz. Christopher was delivered, she held a press conference to tell about it. "It beats any show I've been to," trilled Carol, who had stayed awake all through her own production and was later told...
Once its target is located, a Skyhook rescue plane sends a 400-lb., do-it-yourself kit drifting downward by parachute. The bulky package, which is buoyant enough to float if it lands on water, contains a cylinder filled with helium and 500 ft. of woven nylon line with a special suit attached to one end, a balloon to the other. The man to be rescued must be in good enough physical shape to do a few simple things: put on the suit and inflate the balloon with helium. Once the big bag rises to the full length...
