Suffering from an infected foot, nine-year-old Mungai Njoroge had his fears calmed and diverted at a Scottish Presbyterian clinic in Kenya by a kindly doctor who showed him test tubes filled with multicolored liquids. Fascinated, Njoroge decided that he wanted to be a physician, a next-to-impossible ambition for a Kikuyu tribesman. But for 24 years Njoroge pursued his dream. Last week, at 33, he was at sea, homeward-bound as Kenya's first U.S.-trained African physician. He will soon start construction of a 50-bed hospital, the first in Kenya to be operated...
MAGGIE CASSIDY, by Jack Kerouac (189 pp.; Avon; 50?), is a sequel to Doctor Sax (TIME, May 18), the beat Boccaccio's exuberant salute to boyhood. It follows Jack Duluoz and his roughneck buddies from the time they pass puberty (timidly, as if it were a haunted house at midnight) beyond the point at which Duluoz leaves Lowell, Mass., as Kerouac did, to play football for Columbia. Even when these curtains rise briefly, as during the thaw that followed Stalin's death, they reveal strictly solitary singers. At one time or another, the authors represented in these two collections of protesting voices belonged to the chummy writers' cliques of Warsaw. Belgrade and other Red capitals...
Dame Edith Evans as the sympathetic superior general is superb, and she adds a warm human element to the austerity of the film. Peter Finch, the atheistic doctor in the Congo, rattles Sister Luke with his outbursts that question her vocation to be a nun and needle her about her religion and convent rule. Peter Finch and Dean Jagger as Sister Luke's surgeon-father are both excellent contrasting contributors to the nun's saga...
...intercourse . . . contraceptive . . . spermatogenesis . . . sexual climax." And even the least barkbound of spectators may find himself startled to see and hear, in his neighborhood movie house, extended discussion of what constitutes rape ("Violation is sufficient; there need not be a completion ... on the part of the man"), of whether a doctor can or cannot "tell if a married woman has been raped." The Chicago police commissioner, at any rate, was so startled that he banned the film, and the moviemakers eagerly expect that other communities will follow suit...
