...docudrama about the legal-political battle between Bush and Al Gore will remind us of all that again. You might think that HBO would have timed Recount to air around Election Day. As it turns out, the network could not have scheduled the movie better. The Democratic primary, like the Florida election, has turned out close enough that it must be decided by people whom nobody voted for--this time superdelegates, not Supreme Court Justices. With the old electoral wounds being ripped open, here comes Recount like a brimming shaker of salt...

...decade ago. That TV film's script was co-written by Paul Greengrass, and Travis has borrowed some of the jittery camerabatics that Greengrass applied as director to of United 93and the last two episodes of the Jason Bourne saga. You can easily spot Travis's attempt at docudrama bona fides from the gritty cinematography. All the 50-plus mid-level stars - Quaid, Hurt, Weaver, Bruce McGill - are shot (I mean photographed) so unflatteringly that they look weary, lined, older than John McCain on one of his recent bad days...

...Mountains Painted with Turmeric is a well-captured docudrama, and Jhuma's acquiescence makes sense in a novella that chronicles life in an isolated 1950s Nepalese village. Dhané's misfortune, though heartbreaking, is also true to life. Readers may pity him as he and his family are run out of town, and yet, as rural tragedies go, theirs is distressingly mundane - and timeless...

...know your film festival is a hit when people nearly kill each other to get into the screening of a movie they couldn't be paid to see elsewhere. At last year's Toronto International Film Festival, that film was the British docudrama Death of a President, which imagined the assassination of George W. Bush and the tracking of his killer. Outside the theater, people begged to get in as if it were the one and only Beatles reunion. Yet when the film opened in North America a month later, it earned just $519,086. No matter, at least...

...relief road-map look of the aged W.H. Auden. That's partly to isolate the younger Damon generationally as well as geographically from his handlers, but mainly because Greengrass and cinematographer Oliver Wood are going for a verismo feel. The director, who last year did the excellent docudrama United 93, has defined his Bourne location work as guerrilla filmmaking - using concealed cameras in "wild" situations - and he overuses the hand-held shaky-cam to shout, visually, that this is all real, man! "You couldn't make this stuff up," Glenn's chracter wrily observes, as if the audience doesn...
