...churchmen from the "third world" of Africa, Asia and Latin America, who are less concerned with theological niceties than with committing the church to support of the poor and the underprivileged. There were 32 delegates from developing nations, for example, on the 105-man committee that drafted the document on peace and international justice, which not only condemned the use of nuclear weapons in war but also gave support to the idea of selective pacifism. Traditionally, Christian moral theology has accepted conscientious objection only on the all-or-nothing basis of opposition to all warfare. Reflecting a new consensus...

Third-world delegates also had a large hand in shaping the council's statement on world economic and social devel opment, which underscored the gap between rich and poor nations. The document declared that it was the "duty" of churches in industrialized nations to influence their governments on behalf of increases in foreign aid and trade agreements favoring underdeveloped lands. One proposal that is likely to get lukewarm response was that individual Christians, through voluntary donations, give a percentage of their own income to development aid, making up the difference between what their governments spend on this cause...

Minimonarchy. The constitution sets up a tightly controlled minimonarchy in which the real power rests with the Premier, a post that Papadopoulos hopes to retain through popular elections. Under the new document, which will be presented to the people in a referendum on Sept. 29, the government at some unspecified time will recall King Constantine from his Roman exile. But the constitution strips him of his two most important prerogatives-the power to hire and fire Premiers and to command the armed forces. ...Vietnamese intelligence seems to share the U.S. State Department's assessment that the Alliance is "a creation of the N.L.F. and Hanoi." The Viet Cong, intelligence insists, have been thinking in terms of another front -aimed in particular at the cities-for some time. A document captured last year noted that "the more allies we find, even if they are temporary and precarious, the better." Communist or not, the Alliance could gain appeal in war-weary cities if the Communists launch another urban offensive or if President Nguyen Van Thieu's government shows signs of cracking. Obviously...

...film is based on a book of the same name, which is a curious anti-war document. Robin Moore wrote it purporting to show what a big job the heroic Green Berets were doing in Vietnam. At the time of his writing the government was falsely insisting we had only 12,000 technical advisors in Vietnam. In the book, Green Berets lead patrols, scorn their corrupt Vietnamese allies, torture prisoners as the first step in interrogation, chase the enemy across the border into Laos, and even parachute an exclusively American special mission into North Vietnam--acts all that have denied...
