...Chasids, who chased back to God by bricking themselves into a 4x5 hovel with nothing but a palette, a Bible, and the sky above them. Bigger-hearted men carve out their own living communities and bring back McCabe and Mrs. Miller, or, better still, a Wild Bunch. Hardier minds document the ravages of society up-front, eschewing allegory, in an Hour of the Furnaces. Kubrick, always an ironist, maximum exploiter of minor tools and passions, stays in a London studio--and cuts himself off from whatever roots his art grew from...

Pragmatic Way. In the briefings Nixon and Kissinger expressed enthusiasm about the communique, though perhaps with less justification. They argued that the statement had been more trouble for the Chinese than for the Americans. The U.S. negotiators approached the document in a pragmatic, legalistic way; the ideological Chinese labored over every word to make sure that it was in harmony with principle -the thought of Chairman Mao. Some villagers had also been told by the Communists to store up a 15-day supply of food. Captured enemy documents told of a "nationwide spring campaign" to be launched early this week, and one defector volunteered the campaign's slogan: "One day's effort will make up for 20 years of fighting." A contradictory document ordered Viet Cong cadres "not to start anything until June or July...

...cities-where Irving reported his progress with Hughes. Irving said that he first met Hughes at 7 a.m. on Feb. 13 on a mountaintop in Oaxaca, Mexico. He reported that he had signed a letter of agreement with Hughes in San Juan on March 4. He brought the forged document to New York, and on March 23 signed with McGraw-Hill a contract providing for an immediate $100,000 advance. Eventually McGraw-Hill paid Irving $700,000 in advances, of which $650,000 was intended for Hughes and ended up in the "Helga Hughes" account in Zurich. Irving smoothly explained...
