Each morning before dawn, a secret print shop at the CIA's Langley, Va., compound produces a handful of copies of the nation's most closely guarded document, the President's daily brief. The PDB, as it is known, is meant to apprise the President of the latest, most crucial intelligence on threats to the nation's security. But the document, which for years has been produced by the CIA, came under much criticism during the investigations of prewar intelligence on Iraq. Now the PDB is in the midst of its biggest reform ever, as the new Director of National...
There's a top-secret 147-page internal document at Microsoft called "The Book of Xenon." Xenon is Microsoft's private code name for the Xbox 360, and "The Book of Xenon" spells out the company's entire strategy for it. Large chunks of "The Book of Xenon" deal with something it calls the D.E.L., which stands for the Digital Entertainment Lifestyle. This is shorthand for the notion that all media--movies, music, games, cameras, phones, TV--are becoming digital media, and that's changing how we relate to them and how they relate to one another. Plates of cheese, bread and sliced meats came at regular intervals, as did the 35-year-old brandy. (A vintage that so captivated me, I felt moved to document it with my camera.) A former Russian army captain from Moscow joined us after a time for a round of "cha-cha," as Georgian vodka is known. At 130 proof, the homemade brew clears the sinuses. (I have a picture of this bottle as well.) We talked about oil prices...
...surprisingly, that etiquette lesson has inspired some high-level heckling. Best-selling author Joao Ubaldo Ribeiro wrote an apoplectic critique that caused such a furor last week that the government agreed to review its list. Ribeiro called the wonk who wrote the document "arrogant, cretinous and incompetent" but stopped short of calling the author a clown. (Had he done so, the government's vocabulary primer explains, "the professional who makes a living from making other people laugh might get offended.") When asked why the administration decided to suspend distribution of the document, Perly Cipriano, the tight-lipped Deputy Secretary...
