...memetic battleground does not as yet include, however, places like Afghanistan. Here are the game preserves for weak and un-adaptive memes, the great game parks for the memetic equivalent of the dodo. We need to introduce the rabbit to their Australia, the zebra mussel to their Mississippi. Instead of bombs, we should be dropping radios that receive a generous sampling of free-world radio in order to inoculate them with a normal culture of memes before they are infected by the worst of the bunch, the Ebolas of the meme world, suicidal self-righteousness...

SQUARE PEG Apple's distinctive Power Mac G4 Cube, which made such a splash in industrial-design circles when it debuted last summer, has gone the way of the dodo and the Apple Newton. The Cube--a full-fledged Mac packed into a gleaming clear plastic case 8 in. on a side--looked at first like another computing coup for chairman Steve Jobs, but it never quite caught on. ...Aimee Mann, "Bachelor No. 2, or the Last Remains of the Dodo" Gorgeous hooks and bittersweet attitude to spare. Nothing involving the marriage of melody and lyrics (the basis for songs, last I checked) beat "Red Vines" in these ears this year. Throw in the Oscar nomination for "Magnolia" (inexplicably defeated by the odious Phil Collins entry), a tour with hubby Michael Penn and a worthwhile best-of collection including highlights from her 'Til Tues-days, and it was a banner year for the prickly princess...

...needs we get shortchanged most on are our intellectual ones. TF's who don't speak English, a lack of thesis advisors--not to mention advisors in general--one-on-one tutorials disappearing the way of the dodo and our cool and outrageous ideas stymied by paperwork and a matrix of rules so complex they make the best of us simply accept the inevitability of defeat. We want the Harvard administration to be more responsive to our needs, but we also want less Harvard administration...
