...short running time the movie does occasionally become tiresome in its second half, when Morton drops out of the picture to make way for a fancier enchantress. Unfortunately, Uma Thurman disappoints as Blanche, an Anais Nin wannabe with a fetish for performing geniuses: the amusing concept of her character doesnt justify her time on screen. The period detail, though sumptuously photographed by Chinese cinematographer Zhao Fei, doesnt hold interest on its own. Happily, the film finds its way back again in the end when Emmet shows up outside Hatties laundry. A lovely scene between Penn and Morton in the films...

...sounds contrived, and it is. Worse, the plot suffers from a pervasive staleness. It's as if Schumacher, who both wrote and directed, simply recycled bits and pieces of old scripts. Flawless deals with weighty stuff in tolerance, illness, identity crises, but it doesnt bother to say anything new about these issues. The audience can see the films "can't we all just get along" plot devices from a mile away...

With a name like Seductions, one might be tempted to think that the trio of plays currently running at The Works Theater in Somerville would make for an evening of romance and poetry. But it doesnt take long to remember that for modern authors, love is every bit as capable of clearing a path of destruction and despair as that other great theme of literature, death. Seductions is less about sexual temptation than it is about power and its abuses. From the stale to the distressing to the absurd, it paints a picture of love not as something divine...
