...caring as Peter Gurlanick. In his determination to depict a human Elvis he leaves no stone unturned, as the voluminous Notes, Bibliography and Acknowledgements attest. The result is a thorough account of the last 19 years of Elvis' life, in which the lithe, rebellious rocker who snarled "Hound Dog" while swiveling his hips turned into a pill-popping, sickly wreck. Although the reader may not exactly agree with the author's assessment that there is "no sadder story," the tale contained within Careless Love is certainly a tragedy, of "the price that is paid for dreams" and their fulfillment beyond...
...Silver's debut seems, at first, disappointing. Liquid Sky Music's first release, Don't Panic! is an uptempo concoction of four-on-the-floor beats and thick synth lines. But DJ Silver is deceptive. This is much more than a dance album. Although tracks like "B My Dog" and "Wardance (Never Trust a Hippie)" have dancefloor potential, these songs are often far too erratic and cerebral to liven up your next party. In the tradition popularized by Richard James of Aphex Twin, DJ Silver charts his sonic terrain with analog synths sighing and chirping over energetic beats. And although...
...threatened, he turns into a shell-shock poster child and begins writhing all over the floor. He turns into a worm. Furthering this redoubling of the gender-turn as species-turn, Bryan Leach '00 plays an anthropomorphic (albeit morphologically impaired [a la Rilke's Archaisicher Torso Apollos]) dog, a stereotypical Scotland Yard scrub, who's neutered jokes wear thin, to say the least. Also included in this category is Donatello Mywife (ably, even riotously, acted by Michael Roiff '01) because he is: a) Italian; and b) seemingly the genetic dregs of...let's just say his mother danced with wolves...
None of this is intrusive, but there is something intense about the discreet effort that has gone into it--analysis raised to poetry. It demands close looking--and gets it, from the little dog in the foreground with its back to us, transfixed by the sight. And things are complicated a little further by a second window, on the right, that lights up the mother and child and leaves a brilliant splash of gold on the brass bed warmer hanging above the mother's head, like a displaced halo...
