...medium's venerable archetype of familial dysfunction, which is to say that Mom, Lois, is a saint; Dad, Peter, is a boob; the kids are mutants (baby Stewie, for instance, is an evil genius plotting world domination); and the voice of reason is Brian, the family's talking dog. The early plots are standard-issue situation comedy (Dad gets laid off, Mom mounts a chaotic production of The King and I), but in the pilot script, at least, MacFarlane's pell-mell wit recalls The Simpsons' fevered early-'90s creative peak. ...Hiatt Steele raised eyebrows among defense lawyers. Steele is accused of obstructing justice and making false statements when she denied that Kathleen Willey told her Clinton made a pass at Willey in 1993. But stranger than the fact of the indictment of this bit player, say lawyers with no dog in the fight, is that it's based in part on Steele's telling her allegedly false version to the press, specifically Newsweek and the National Enquirer--and in 1997, before Starr had even begun this phase of his probe. Anointed the next Tupac Shakur by the hip-hop press, the performer DMX has one of the better voices in rap: low, raw, charismatic. In fact, one could say he sounds like a cross between Barry White and McGruff the Crime Dog. However, DMX doesn't share McGruff's anticrime leanings: his new album, like his last, which went double platinum, is seething with viciousness and violence. His lyrics--often simple and clumsy--attack other black people, homosexuals and women. DMX is at his best when he becomes more contemplative, as he does in Coming From, a moving ballad...
