Lesser Today would be more apt for this retrograde expansion of NBC's franchise morning show. The easy-listening fare--dating younger men, how to "test-drive" a dog--isn't really the problem so much as the tone. The ingratiating host trio makes Rosie O'Donnell sound like a shock jock (co-host Florence Henderson seems grateful to be on TV at all: "Good morning! This is so much fun!"). After The View proved that homebound audiences like a little sass with their coffee and celebs, Later needs a shot of attitude in its cup. Maybe Joy Behar...
...fact, it's the Reform Party, and Pat Buchanan's apparent impending defection to it, that has Forbes in attack-dog mode. He's spending the week trawling California for stray Buchanan voters. His bait: With Buchanan out of the way, he is the most prominent conservative candidate left in the GOP primary. California is a particularly tough sell -- voters rejected a school vouchers program, a key Forbes plank, a few years ago, and his anti-abortion stance doesn't play well there. Still, with Buchanan nearly out of the picture, Forbes may be the best alternative for Republican protest...
...However, the harder edged songs like the first single "Can't Change Me," "Flutter Girl" and "Steel Rain" contained a dose of emotion and life that was undeniable and mesmerizing. And even though Cornell nodded to his past (with Soundgarden's "Like Suicide" and Temple Of The Dog's "All Night Thing"), the songs had enough of a unique spin on them to make them sound like fresh compositions...
