...Pierre himself (Rick Reynolds), beloved in book form as the kid who never said anything to anybody except "I don't care" and eventually I don't cared himself into getting gobbled up by a lion. This version, by casting a body-suited women (Linda Hammott) as the doggerel in just the right suggestive murmur, manages to transform this grisly little sage into a sex fable--a counterintuitive and ultimately meaningless exercise. Of course it works that way if you want it to: "Then I will out you, don't I care!" "And you will be inside...

That bit of doggerel is the opening stanza of a poem written by Mani Said al Oteiba, Oil Minister of the United Arab Emirates, to commemorate the marathon twelve-day meeting in London of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries that ended last week. The minister's lament reflected the mood of desperation that led OPEC to slash its official bench-mark price from $34 per bbl. to $29, the first cut in the group's 23-year history...

Remembers Ted: "We hardly got back to the store from putting the sign up before people started turning in." Before long, billboards sprouted along the highways in every direction; someone once counted 53 along a 45-mile stretch. G.I.s tacked up Wall Drug signs as they made their way through Europe in World War II. The same thing...

...Poems 1944-1979 is, as any bag of 35 years' worth of anything has every right to be, a bit of a hodge podge. There are some prematurely-greying early works of some elegance, rather reminiscent of early Philip Larkin or John Wain ("Belgian Winter," "Retrospect"); there is some doggerel ("Fair Shares for All"); there is some sophomoric drivel ("Toys," "Report"); there are fine things ("Science Fiction," "A Song of Experience"--the latter with witty, well-crafted verses like "He tried all colours, white and black, and coffee/Though quite a few were chary, more were bold/Some took it like...
