Nothing Top-Loftical. Whitman was a great, .puffing manifesto writer, a dogmatist of the "I." In view of this, it is odd that in the most personal of all art forms, the private letter, Whitman should be rather closemouthed. He disdained "top-loftical" correspondence and "fancy words," so that there is a good deal of all-too-plain prose about the Washington weather, small sums of money, and "good grub" at his boardinghouse. The reason for his reticence seems to be that when the poet's private emotions were most powerfully involved, convention made him rein in his rhetoric...
...Communist system, the top dog must also be top dogmatist. In seven years as the Soviet Union's highly practical boss, Nikita Khrushchev has worked out a doctrine of coexistence between Communism and the West to suit the realities of a highly developed Soviet industrial society. The doctrine has come under increasing attack from the militant revolutionaries of Communist China (TIME, June 27). Last week, calling Eastern European Communist leaders to his side, Khrushchev went before the Rumanian Party Congress in Bucharest to give his first direct answer to Mao Tse-tung's challenge to his ideological primacy...
Suppressed Demands. The sentiments were those that Party Dogmatist Secchia is known to hold; the words were probably those of his male secretary and close confidant, Aldo Seniga. The letter itself was reportedly inspired by Bruno Fortichiari, one of the founders of Italian Communism, now 62 and out of favor with Togliatti's blue-suit Communists for his long insistence on militant tactics. Several days before the conference opened, Secretary Seniga suddenly disappeared. Apparently afraid that he might turn up somewhere with a damaging story, the Communists characteristically accused him of absconding with 8,000,000 lire and some...
...real No. 2 power seemed to be Liu, the party dogmatist, who was made head of "the highest organ of state power," the People's Congress Standing Committee. By constitutional definition, the all-powerful Standing Committee has the right to annul decisions of the State Council (Cabinet), which gives Liu a veto over his rival, Chou Enlai, who was reappointed Premier. Liu's name now follows Mao's on all lists, and leads the rest when Mao's does not appear. Tall, gaunt Liu Shao-chi is one of the least known of the Peking rulers...
