...Oral Roberts was fasting in his Tulsa Prayer Tower, a 200-ft.-tall glass- and-steel spire on the Oral Roberts University campus, and still awaiting this week's life-threatening deadline, despite a surprise stay of execution -- a gift of $1.3 million from Jerry Collins, a short, gruff dog-track owner from Sarasota, Fla. ("It's very seldom I ever go to church," said the philanthropic Collins. "I help them all.") Roberts, feeling perkier after the donation, proclaimed Bakker a "prophet of God," who had been victimized by an "unholy trio of forces," presumably referring to Swaggart, the Assemblies...
...Oral Roberts story neared its conclusion. It was on Bakker's show that Roberts said he needed only $1.3 million to reach his death-preventing money goal by the end of March. That apparently inspired a gift for precisely that amount last week from Collins, owner of two Florida dog-racing tracks with $50 million last year in gambling proceeds. Evangelicals consider gambling a sin, and the racetrack connection upset some old-time Roberts supporters...
...chamber was exposed when another captive, Josephine Rivera, 26, bolted from Heidnik's 1987 Cadillac as it was parked in North Philadelphia. She telephoned the police, claiming she had been held since November. Rivera reported that Heidnik whipped the women with a stick and fed them a mixture of dog food and, it was later learned, minced human flesh. One woman had been electrocuted, the captives said, when Heidnik stood her in the basement earthen pit, used a garden hose to flood it and touched a live wire to her chains. Her body was found in a New Jersey state...
...Aquino's battle cry by offering a cease-fire during Easter and the congressional elections in May, but Manila rejected the proposal. At the same time, however, many army officers faulted Aquino for not providing a comprehensive counterinsurgency plan to accompany her tough words. "We are like a dog running in circles looking for its tail," said one general. He could hardly have been comforted by Defense Minister Rafael Ileto's announcement last week that he planned to keep 40% of the military's 125,000 troops out of sight until after the May elections, lest voters feel intimidated. Said...
...exemplar of success in classical music, in Japan he is a role model to thousands of young performers. Yet his exalted position is resented by many; to them, he is still the nail that sticks out. In the West, old questions about how deeply he understands music continue to dog him. His detractors write of his "blank interpretations," and indeed Ozawa has always been more effective in Strauss and Stravinsky showpieces than in Beethoven symphonies. Music that demands depth rather than flash taxes him. He has taken up opera in Europe, but his strengths and weaknesses remain the same...
