...same time, the investment-friendly biotech industry is blossoming with the official opening on Monday of the North Carolina Research Center in Kannapolis, just 30 minutes from downtown Charlotte. The public-private partnership is the vision of David Murdock, the billionaire owner of Dole Food Company and Castle & Cooke. Estimates are that eventually the campus will create 5,500 biotech jobs locally and 37,000 related jobs across the region. More than symbolic, the NCRC stands on the grounds of a former textile mill, Pillowtex, which closed in 2003 with a loss of nearly 5,000 jobs...

...When Bob Dole realized he wasn't going to win against President Bill Clinton in 1996, Dole started campaigning in states that were of little help to him but where he could assist Republicans trying to hold on to their majorities in Congress. That kind of pivot hasn't happened in this race, though over the weekend conservative writer David Frum openly called on McCain to do just that for the good of the party. ...loves the musical Cats: "At long last, the Republican Party had nominated its first baby boomer for the presidency, and the man they had chosen was no more culturally 'with it' than Bob Dole, the septuagenarian previous nominee, had been," New York Times correspondent Frank Bruni writes. Bush viewed the musical Cats as modern theater at its finest ... and openly admitted that martial artist Chuck Norris was his favorite film actor. (Source: Bruni's Ambling into History...

...According to Ministry of Finance, Japan's banana imports were 970,000 tons in 2007, mostly from Taiwan and the Philippines. "It takes from 10 to 15 months to harvest bananas, so it is not at all easy to meet a sudden increase in demand," says Dole's Ohtaki. Dole Japan is trying to make up the shortfall by negotiating distribution deals with Dole corporations in other countries. Supplying the spike in demand will be lucrative, because banana prices in Japan have risen about 20% as a result of supply shortages that have coincided with the diet...
