This winded frontier comedy concerns one of those fun couples who, sadly, amuse only each other. The Duchess (Goldie Hawn) is a Barbary Coast hooker trying to get off her back and onto her feet by turning a dishonest dollar. The Dirtwater Fox (George Segal) is a sharpie whose smart schemes always collapse in chaos. These two hook up to defraud a lubricious Mormon-a bit of bunko that helps keep the Dirtwater Fox a few steps ahead of some bad guys who are giving him heated chase. It seems that he made off with their loot from a bank...

Underlying much that is happening is a new sense of competition. Owners have always spoken highly of competition, but what they had in mind was team-against-team on the field. They never bestirred themselves greatly to compete with other amusements for the entertainment dollar, and they did not have to compete very strenuously with the players for the baseball dollar. When Pittsburgh Outfielder Willie Stargell bats against Seaver, "it's like two big rocks grinding together," says Stargell...

Andy Messersmith's new employer may have something to learn about baseball, but he is already an expert on winning. After inheriting his father's outdoor billboard agency when he was 24, Turner built it into a million-dollar communications business, with TV stations in Atlanta and Charlotte, N.C. that mainly broadcast syndicated shows, sports events and movies. He also races sailboats well enough to have been named Yachtsman of the Year in 1970 and 1973, and to have skippered Mariner in the 1974 America's Cup trials. "I'd rather sink than lose...

Interesting that Lipstick, starring fashion mannequin Margaux Hemingway, has been released in the same month that Hemingway signed a million-dollar contract with Faberge to promote a new perfume called "Babe." In the movie, Hemingway plays herself--a rangy blonde beast with innocent eyes and a loose smile. In the "Babe" ads, she lies snuggled in a tuxedoed gentleman's arms as they float on a tire-raft on some cool body of water in the dusk. Both media peddle the same image--Babe, at once the child and the temptress, the pampered, beautiful, single woman who's rich enough...

...small-denomination, old bills, which could not be traced by tax authorities. Thus he could contribute to his favored candidates more than the $3,000 tax-free limit that prevailed until 1972. As the Watergate investigations later disclosed, Hughes in 1970 sent President Nixon $100,000 in hundred-dollar bills, which were given to Charles ("Bebe") Rebozo in two installments in manila envelopes. There has been speculation that the purpose of the Watergate break-in and bugging was to discover how much the Democratic National Committee knew of that secret gift, but federal investigators have been unable to establish...
