...guards patrol the R&D building in Hawthorne, Calif., as if it were a Strategic Air Command base. Understandably. A successful new product can mean buckets of the stuff that grown-ups' dreams are made of. Coleco came charging out of the Cabbage Patch with its pathetic but lovable doll, and currently ranks third, with annual sales of more than $500 million. Hasbro, the leader, with $1.3 billion in sales projected for this year, is considered the industry hotshot. Every year some 4,000 new products soar and roar out of the factories in hopes of finding a place under...
...essential medium always is light. Orsay is theatrical only at one point, where it should be: the key exhibits of its architectural section, at the far end of the nave, are two astounding models of the Paris Opera by Richard Peduzzi. One is a transverse section -- the ultimate doll's house, with every balustrade, fresco, gilded caryatid and square of marble inlay faithfully reproduced -- and the other is a site model under a glass floor, so that one walks in air across the entire quartier, like a balloonist...

Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night pinned the larkish wit of four Liverpudlians on top of the world; Bob Rafelson's Head (co-written with Jack Nicholson) was a brilliant, bilious suicide note from the Monkees to their die-hard fans. Today rock helps...
Ruth Rendell's memory has been obscured in recalling the details of my dealings with her (BOOKS, Aug. 18). Several years ago, I inquired about the cost of optioning her book The Killing Doll for a motion picture, not for myself to star in but for my production company to produce. As it happened, no studio was interested in the project. I then withdrew my offer and moved on. It comes as a shock now to learn that Miss Rendell is under the impression that she turned me down because she thought I was unsuitable to play a part, which...
