Usage:

Adequate though small is Engelbert Dollfuss. Last week the mite of a Chancellor (4 ft. 11 in.) who holds the balance between Austria's raging Nazis and scarcely less irate Socialists, decided that what he needed was a whopping gallows. Not since 1920, when the death penalty was abolished, has there been such a thing in Austria. Engelbert Dollfuss called carpenters. With a mighty thwacking they built in the gloomy courtyard of Vienna's district jail a monster gallows "adequately tall," said to be the biggest ever reared in Austria...

Affairs have been so long in a state of crisis in Austria that the high tension is assuming normality. Herr Dollfuss is still ruling by the skin of his excellently white teeth, the Nazis and Heimwehr are making a great deal of noise and suffering a wild persecution, and the Socialists are biding their time, suspicious of both parties, with a general strike trump up their ragged sleeves in case of emergency. The Chancellor has ordered gallows to be erected for public punishment; mass demonstrations have been outlawed; the opposition press is now effectively muzzled. One thing which this situation...

What, King Victor Emanuel asked, of that potent little Nazi-stopper, Austria's Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss who emerged nearly intact last fortnight from a point-blank meeting with an assassin? Zita produced the strange new argument of Austrian Royalists: If Dollfuss were killed, there is no second Dollfuss to take his place. If her son, King-Emperor Otto, were killed, a replacement would be fixed...

Totally unready to die, Chancellor Dollfuss was last week busily stuffing up the chinks in his ''Patriotic Front" coalition against Naziism. Already head of the army, police and gendarmerie, he took over the headship of Prince Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg's "White Fascist" Heimwehr. In payment he made Prince von Starhemberg deputy chairman of the Patriotic Front. Thus he prevented the hot-headed Prince from going off half-cocked and had the Heimwehr men to help him break any strikes the Socialists may call. He dissolved the Socialist singing society, the Sängerbund...
