...Enter Ali G, a tracksuit-wearing "hip-hop journalist" and the alter ego of British comic Sacha Baron Cohen. Da Ali G Show (HBO, Friday nights, 12:30 a.m. E.T.) is a little like This Is Spinal Tap, if the doltish rockers were asking the questions. In one of a series of artfully staged (but real) newsmaker interviews, Ali asks former U.N. Secretary-General Boutros BoutrosGhali: "Which is the funniest language? It's French, innit?" When he asks a panel of religious leaders, "Isn't God just an overhyped David Blaine?" you swear one of the panelists, a Dick Cheney...

...criticize Israel. In the eyes of many pro-Israel right-wingers, the mere suggestion that there are Jews out there who oppose Israeli policies is enough to evoke hysteria. One e-mailer kindly informed me that the only Jews who criticize the Israeli government are “doltish VES majors...

...leads among the Venetians, New England Conservatory first-year Stephen Beaudoin fares well as the cheerily optimistic and slightly dopey gondolier Marco, his fairly hearty (but once again too quiet) singing matched with an eye for physical comedy. Krishnan Unnikrishnan '02 is equally endearing and doltish as Giuseppe, fellow gondolier and possible heir-to-the-throne. Unnikrishnan hams it up remarkably well with lots of giggly smirks and "Aw, shucks" glances, but at times this silliness comes out as slightly effeminate camp--manly gondolieri do not typically bat their eyelashes when they're being serenaded by a lovely contadine...

...soon revealed that Mrs. Prentice herself is similarly unclothed, having been sexually assaulted by (orbeen assaulting?) a bellhop (James Carmichael, '01), who subsequently enters and manages to also become undressed. Bring into the confusion an overzealous Psychiatric Commissioner of the British Parliament ("Dr. Groves", Brendan Greaves, '00) and a doltish Police Sergeant (Will Burke, '99), and soon more than half the cast is running around naked and all are certifiably insane...
