Early last month Quadros stood in his office with a visiting publisher, pointed through the window at the round modern dome at the end of the Congress Building. "If I could tear that down, Brazil would be better governed," he said. Three weeks ago he told an aide that he had a good mind to resign when Congress, after allowing 19 Quadros vetoes to stand, overruled Veto No. 20. "He was furious," says the aide...
...humid midsummer night in Washington. The city slept as best it could. On Capitol Hill, the great dome glowed above an empty plaza. But in its nearly empty chamber, the U.S. Senate was still in session-of a sort. Rhode Island's Democratic Senator Claiborne Pell, acting as presiding officer, nodded in the chair; Democratic Whip Hubert Humphrey and Republican Whip Tom Kuchel slumped at their desks, staring trancelike at nothing. And from his back-row desk, Wisconsin's Democratic Senator William Proxmire talked and talked and talked, pausing only to sip butterscotch-flavored Metrecal...
...help him design his first and only Byzantine church, Wright got advice from his Greek Orthodox wife and pondered such examples as Istanbul's Santa Sophia, with its 107-ft.-diameter dome set high on pendentives. But he decided that "it is never necessary to cling slavishly to tradition." He used an equilateral Greek cross as a ground plan, with three arms containing seats and the fourth the altar. Over this, rather than the usual square design, he superimposed a circle to form the outer wall; surmounting the wall came a dome 106 ft. in diameter. The stained-glass...
Last week the gum was sticking again. After eight years (since The Road to Bali), Hope, Crosby and Lamour were back in action-on The Road to Hong Kong, which is about to be shot on location in London. Arriving for work, Teapot Dome Crosby poured himself a cuppa, resulting in a rare publicity shot: Crosby minus toupee. The tea provided a needed bracer against the role of a Do-It-Yourself Space Kit salesman shot into orbit with his colleague, Hope, by a mad scientist (Robert Morley) who is trying to conquer space. Dorothy Lamour will remain pretty much...
Tricky Business. Archaeologists raised the alarm when they realized the temple's peril, and several schemes were suggested to keep the water away from Ramses' memorial. One faction wanted to cover the temple with a watertight dome, another to protect it with a curving cofferdam. Both dome and cofferdam could be built, but they would be difficult to maintain and would dwarf the temple. The most attractive scheme, conceived by Italian Archaeologist Piero Gazzola, was to cut the whole temple free of the surrounding rock and lift it with 308 hydraulic jacks to a new place above...
