...correcting those concepts, they hope to bolster environmental concern with something that goes beyond moral fervor or social awareness. The God of Genesis, say these thinkers, did not give man a blank check when he said: "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion . . . over every living thing." Too often this has been used as a text for exploitation, reducing nature to a collection of useful objects...

...wanted to see something intense, something grandiose and mighty. I wanted to see a giant squid and a sperm whale battle chthonically and monumentally for the dominion of the oceans. The whale and squid engage and storm, the water froths and crupts in thundering contest-the spectators are driven back in awe and terror-the whale blasts away the roof, the squid uproots the Tank itself-the whale leaps up and down like a diving world, stunning the horrendous squid, who tires, submits, and is vanquished! In celebration of his victory the whale cannons his ghastly ordinance over...

...long time it seemed that there might be no successors. A surprise candidate has now emerged from the wings, an odd figure with a loser's accent and a bizarre past. His earlier books had astonishing power, using dwarfs and drums and scarecrows to explore the nightmare dominion of Nazi Germany and the guilt that followed. Son Harry Jr., however, has had trouble controlling the legacy he received after his father's retirement in 1965 and death a year later. In 1969 Virginia Democrats rejected the Byrd machine's conservative gubernatorial candidate in favor of a moderate who ultimately lost to Republican Linwood Holton. Last week "Young Harry," 55, himself abdicated the Byrd throne that...

Behind the environment crisis in the U.S. are a few deeply ingrained assumptions. One is that nature exists primarily for man to conquer. Many thinkers have traced the notion back to early Judaism and Christianity. Genesis 1: 26 is explicit on the point that God gave man "dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth." The ecological truth is quite different. The great early civilizations ?Babylonian, Sumerian, Assyrian, Chinese, Indian and perhaps Mayan?over-exploited the basic resource of land. In the end, says...
