Labor Crisis: Something had to be done to stave off trouble after the expiration on March 1 of some 7,000 labor contracts, affecting workers in every part of France. Ugly signs of labor unrest have been appearing for several months, and last week there were grounds to fear another wave of sit-down strikes and stand-up riots such as burst forth under Socialist Premier Léon Blum (TIME, June 15, 1936), today Vice-Premier...
...years ago Lester Patrick did the same thing that Connie Mack has twice done in baseball: disbanded his great team to start building another from scratch. He had paved the way for doing so. Scouting -from the mill pond up-has long been the customary procedure in big-league hockey, but Lester Patrick four years ago brought an innovation to the sport when he started a training school for likely prospects. A big sheet of glazed paper is dipped in water, spread smooth on a table, and gobs of color are dropped on it. The child then swirls the mixture over the paper with both hands, fingers, even forearms, continually creating new designs. Having no crayon or brush...
...story ragtime is to the Negroes of the South. But the first man to write ragtime down on paper was a slick-haired Kentuckian, Ben Harney, whose songs Mr. Johnson Turn Me Loose and You've Been a Good Old Wagon, but You've Done Broke Down were hits in the gay 'nineties. Last week 66-year-old Harney, forgotten in the era of swing, died of heart disease in a Philadelphia rooming house...
