...objects are not segregated in race divisions but hung together in a harmonious whole to carry out "the idea of international sympathy." There were studies of a cow, a cat, a goose, and a donkey by Jeanne Poupelet; compositions by such Frenchmen as Derain, Andre, Rouault, Aristide Maillol; by Augustus John and Jacob Epstein; by George Luks, Jo Davidson, Childe Hassam, Gertrude Whitney and Robert W. Chanler. The metropolitan critics, loyal patriots all, generously discussed the merits of the U. S. paintings: "Jazz," an experiment in abstract form by Man-Ray, an American living in Paris; a picture by Edward...
...mention was made of the fertility of these new strains. The mule (donkey and horse), as every one knows, is sterile and cannot reproduce his kind; likewise the "turken" (turkey and chicken) (TIME, Dec. 14, MISCELLANY), the "liger" and "tigon" (lion and tiger hybrids). This factor bears directly upon such hybrids' commercial value. Great would be the fortune of that showman who could advertise an "eleraffe" or "rhinocerdile," whether the animal was sterile or not. Greater would be that showman's fraud, however. It is impossible to cross animals not of the same order or family...
...July 13 last, TIME printed a story which stressed the prominent part played by a donkey, a lemonade stand, an ice cream booth, at the ground-breaking ceremonies of Dr. Reisner's Broadway Tabernacle, Manhattan. The Christian Century "rewrote" this story, without mentioning the fact that it had rewritten it from TIME. When Dr. Reisner wrote a letter to TIME denying that the ground-breaking ceremonies had been unChristlike, undignified, TIME printed his letter (TIME, Aug. 31) but made public note of the fact that the Christian Century had also misrepresented Dr. Reisner-as much as to imply that...
Members of a Methodist church recently broke ground for a new edifice. There was a parade headed by a police band, moving pictures shown against a screen hung on the outside of the old church, and within the old building a continuous vaudeville show, including a donkey educated to pick numbers out of a hat, hot-dog and pop stands, while plenty of red lemonade added to the eclat of the occasion. The event took place in New York city, where the new four million dollar Broadway temple, under the leadership of Dr. C. F. Reisner is, according...
...ourselves as undergraduates, graduates, and teachers. The caption of the first article not only has a flick at current fiction; it recalls a profoundly significant remark of Mandell Creighton's that. "After we have got rid of the ape and the tiger we shall have to dispose of the donkey, a much more intractable animal." It is reassuring to find the Liberal Club trying to put spirit and glorified common sense into the head of this domestic brute. The burden of the complaint is the submissiveness of the creature. I once heard a wise man say that what struck...
