BRINGING UP DIGITAL BABY It cries, it fidgets, it coos, and it does doo-doo. But this is no ordinary baby. It's a virtual tot that crawls around on your computer screen after you install the PC CD-ROM called Babyz by Mindscape ($30). And why not? If we can practice our nurturing skills feeding Tamagotchis, tickling Furbies and ordering our pet robots around, surely we can "adopt" a virtual baby or two. After naming your bundle of software joy, you can pop it into the changing room for a bath and dress it in impossibly cute bunny suits...
...while View is sprinkled with pop (including a doo-wop quartet and a Puccinified version of Paper Doll), Bolcom has succeeded in smelting many disparate styles into a tightly unified idiom all his own. There are times when the openhearted lyricism of a Leonard Bernstein would have been welcome, but the lean, laconic score keeps the action moving, lending Miller's kitchen-table naturalism a freshening touch of poetry. ...group, and now perform high classical works. The crowd chuckles tentativley, someone blows a pitch and suddenly the two boys are crooning a gassed-up country song about "dee-troit barbeque ribs." From out of the audience, two more tuxedoed guys spin around and race to the stage, doo-wopping and snapping to the tune. Others follow, tripping down the fire escape in the back of the room or popping up from behind the piano. Strangely, I didn't really have a burning desire to explain to my elementary school classmates that I did not, in fact, consume insects and that neither did I tear people's hearts out while they were still alive. Thanks to "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doo," quite possibly the worst film ever (partially filmed in Sri Lanka!), I had to do that multiple times...
