Luxury watches are ordinarily inspired by such things as scuba diving or jet planes, not astrophysics. But industrial designer Marc Newson is anything but ordinary. His new Horizon watch is the result of his long fascination with black holes. Newson, who's designed everything from cars to door handles, named the Horizon for the edge of black holes, where gravity's pull becomes so intense that time disappears. The biomorphic design, with receding perforations that give the illusion of moving through space, heralds the relaunch of the Ikepod watch brand, which also includes redesigns of the Hemipode and Megapode watches...
Alexandria, Va. Behind an Old Town fish-and-chips restaurant displaying a pirate flag is an unmarked door with a blue light denoting the entrance to PX. After you ring the bell, a host's eyes appear in a peephole, and a voice beckons you upstairs?or denies your entry because the place holds only 30 people. Inside, the bar is decked out with mirrored walls and glass chandeliers. Five hundred people lined up outside the American Repertory Theater beginning two and a half hours before the event to hear from the noted South African social justice advocate. Hundreds more were turned away at the door. Tutu’s talk, entitled “Goodness Triumphs Ultimately,” denounced current American foreign policy and stressed the importance of the United States’ position as a global leader. While Tutu counted the U.S. as a strong ally in the fight against apartheid...
...billion of debt. Bank deposits were frozen to halt panicked runs, and an enraged middle class took to the streets. The country went through five Presidents in just two weeks. Wall Street feared that the crisis, one of the worst in South America's history, would spread next door to giant Brazil--where the lite predicted financial ruin if Luiz Incio Lula da Silva, head of the left-wing Workers' Party, was elected President that year--and even to stable Chile, where executives groused over glasses of Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon that the U.S. Congress might block Santiago...
