Cleopatra Jones chronicles the highly unbelievable exploits of a female superagent (Tamara Dobson) who is black, tough, gorgeous and invincible-not necessarily in that order. Cleopatra, who is referred to as "wonder woman," is particularly concerned with quashing dope traffic in the ghetto, and the movie manages to be effective anti-junk propaganda without getting sanctimonious about it. The archvillain is a bulbous bull-dyke, a queen of the pushers called Mommy (Shelley Winters), who turns herself out in a lot of black and henna and rains down awful retribution on recalcitrant underlings. Cleopatra and Mommy spend most...
...very direct, frontal style, Arbus photographed the struggles of those attempting to re-integrate themselves into society and assuage their alienation. She did not deal with those who had already withdrawn--the winos, drunks, and dope freaks. Some altered their lives drastically in order to present a new self-image--changing sex, tattooing a whole body, becoming a human pin cushion with sharp needles jabbed through cheeks, lips, and neck. Others hide deep beneath layers of sequinned veils, Halloween masks, garish sunglasses, or gobs of heavy makeup. Arbus's titles pinpoint exactly the accoutrements used to buttress egos--"A young...
Forced out of the preacher's household because of his romance with the churchman's ward, Ivan turns to running dope for a living. When he attempts to rebel against the strictures of the ganga trade--which lives under the protection of a corrupt government--the penalties grow heavy. Dope brings in high profits for certain middlemen; low wages are paid to the growers, and to the runners as well, who move the stuff between the countryside and the cities...
...Duke and his attorney as they respond in their own way to Vegas' call for a "gross physical salute to the fantastic possibilities of life in this country." Far from accomodating their lifestyle to that of the straight world, they intensify it. They spend several days completely twisted on dope, booze, and lack of sleep, and find this state of mind matches that of the gambling loonies who hang out at the Circus-Circus along with the Forty Flying Carazito Brothers, flaming gorilla, and Six Nymphet Sisters from San Diego. In fact, nobody notices how twisted they...
...huge reptiles standing in blood-soaked carpets sipping cocktails. The drive for success/money/power has created a world where an "eat the wounded" shark ethic prevails, but Thompson believes its apocalypse is imminent. He watches people burn themselves out in struggles for self-preservation, escaping "meat-hook reality" through dope, booze, and watching football -- "whatever short-circuits your brain and grounds it out for the longest possible time...
