Whatever the future of Millennium Approaches on film, the play is currently in the best of hands. Do not let the dopey advertisements with the Ziggy-faced Men-In-Suits keep you away; do not let anything keep you away. Enough cannot be said in praise of Kushner's play, where malignancy--both medical and personal--is more terrifying for being so unfixed, but where courage is always a choice. With this focused, challenging, inspiring production, Altman and her colleagues have made that choice
Essentially, however, it's business as usual in Starship Troopers. Basic training is still brutal. The platoon we follow from the first day of enlistment to battlefield apotheosis contains many familiar types--supermacho drill sergeant, dopey yokel and, at its center, Johnny (Casper Van Dien, a newcomer with a useful, uncanny resemblance to the old B-picture star John Agar), who is the traditional spoiled and aimless kid. He has--need one say?--joined up for the wrong, selfish reasons, but when his hometown is destroyed, Pearl Harbor-style, he embraces the right, vengeful-idealistic rationales for merciless slaughter...
...some cases the actors surpass their own script and achieve the seemingly impossible task of carrying 'Shlemiel' to a higher plane. Benjamin Evett who plays the mischievous Chaim Rascal as well as the Chelmish sage Dopey Pretzel, when not stealing Shlemiel's latkas is doing the same with the stage. Comfortable and at ease with the silliness with the lyrics, he sings with the glee of a Puck and the energy to match the Klezmer Band's clarinet. Also exceptional are the buffoon Gronam Ox and his wife Yenta Pesha (Marilyn Sokol). Shlemiel himself (Will LeBow) is shlemiely enough...
...ultimately irresistible. It also had a big plus in its leading man: Tim Arnold was perfect as the matador whose puffed-up complacency gives way to an amiable cluelessness with the onset of his amnesia. He even succeeded in making El Bean's smitten shyness around Ana engagingly dopey without degenerating into complete farce...

The magazine is the sort that goes in for cover stories like "Twenty-Five Best Sunday Brunches" or "Thirty-Six Ways to Turn Your Bathroom into a Place You Would Want to Spend the Entire Afternoon In"--and the article was terminally dopey, as any article about hipness would be. You don't hear New Yorkers talk about how hip their city is; they talk about harrowing cab rides, rapacious plumbers, crackheads on the sidewalk, all the usual urban horrors. New Yorkers know it's not cool to talk about being hip. Some Midwesterners don't understand that...
