Fizzled Poseurs. Larry and Sarah's friends have a nodding acquaintance with both self-destruction and self-fulfillment. Died. Yaakov Dori, 73, leader of the Israeli army that fought for independence in 1948; after a stroke; in Haifa. A refugee from the pogroms of Russia, Dori immigrated with his family to Palestine in 1905, later joined the Jewish Legion serving under British army command in World War I. Discharged in 1921 for fighting Arabs without British approval, he joined the Haganah, an underground Zionist force, and by 1939 had become its commanding officer. When independence was proclaimed in 1948, the Haganah became Israel's official defense force and Dori its first chief of staff...
