...Those clever Crimson reporters and similar types who wonder why 97 years doth a centennial make should address their inquiries not to the Castle, but to God, on Whose shoulders the responsibility rests. It was God and not the boys at Zero Freedom Square who, manifesting that recurrent and annoying disregard of detail, sent Wunderkind Marty Kaplan to us three years too soon. This obviously did not stop Marty, suggesting that the book might be viewed primarily as a monument to Free Will. In fact, my guess is that one hundred years from now, this book will not be remembered...

Considering the presidential prerogatives and perquisites, a reader is likely to find himself saying "Me-thinks the President doth protest too much." But by inference, Hughes' book makes one thing perfectly clear: No man should be elected to the office who comes to it in advance, as Lyndon Johnson and Rich ard Nixon did, with a built-in case of mild paranoia or a galloping Sisyphus complex...

When the witches await Macbeth's first visit, the circular screen shows a sort of magnified and pulsating green organism. At "A drum! A drum! Macbeth doth come," we hear--indeed we feel--the pounding of heartbeats; but the heart, significantly, is afflicted with arrhythmia. In the scene where Ross calls attention to the solar eclipse, the circle becomes a view of the period of totality with its brightly flaming corona. When Banquo is murdered and Fleance escapes, the circle becomes a blood-red target with a bull's-eye of blue, the color of heavenly innocence...
