Whether the Senate committee would ever vote remained in doubt. It had unanimously approved Lance's nomination in January, reaffirmed that decision last July, and would now reverse itself only if a majority could be persuaded that Lance had deceived them in their initial, and admittedly perfunctory, appraisal of his fitness for office. Not only did any such evidence appear to be shaky, but it was certain that the committee could not legally revoke its confirmation. Apparently, at the worst, the committee could render a critical evaluation of Lance's highflying banking practices and thereby strengthen the resignation...
...more nebulous "goals" to achieve racial balance. Drawing a fine line, Justice lawyers have argued that race can be a consideration in the selection of applicants but must not be the only one. Said one draft of the brief, which was being revised right down to the wire: "We doubt that it is ever proper to use race to close any portion of the class for competition by members of all races. It is one thing to give a minority applicant the sort of consideration that will assist him in competing fairly against other applicants; it is quite another...
...State Department official tried to reassure an Israeli diplomat that "if the statement puts pressure on anyone, it puts pressure on both sides." The Administration is perplexed by seeming discrepancies between Agriculture Minister Ariel Sharon's disclosures about secret new settlements...
Another major proposal faces a Senate floor vote this week, with the outcome in great doubt. The White House wants to continue price controls on natural gas that is produced in one state and sold in another, but let the price rise to $1.75 per 1,000 cu. ft. from a top of $1.47 now. It would also extend controls to gas produced and sold in the same state. The House agreed, but there is a strong move in the Senate to take off all controls and let the price of natural gas rise to any level the market would...
Injury or not, it all ends for everyone sooner or later. In a few weeks the seniors will hang up their pads and take their places on the sidelines with Tim. And without a doubt the strongest and most fond memories they will retain will not be about any exploits on the field, or about some glorious moment, but about their teammates, about the outrageous things said and done, about the bullshittting and jiving and, of course, about the glorious routine...
