...important," senator hillary Clinton of New York said in a moment of clarity during last week's foggy and depressing Senate debate about the war in Iraq, "a strategy to win in Iraq or a strategy for Republicans to win elections here at home." There was, of course, no doubt that politics would trump substance. The Republicans dutifully repeated White House talking points, punctuated occasionally by perverse outbursts like Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe's assertion that "this isn't a civil war...the insurgents aren't Iraqis." Theodore Roosevelt had carried the lethal dose of morphine with him for years. He had taken it to the American West, to the African savanna and, finally, down the River of Doubt--a twisting tributary deep in the Amazon rain forest. The glass vial was small enough to tuck into a leather satchel or slip into his luggage, nearly invisible beside his books, his socks and his eight extra pairs of eyeglasses. Easily overlooked, it was perhaps the most private possession of one of the world's most public...

...December 1913, Roosevelt, then 55, and a small group of men embarked on a journey to explore and map Brazil's River of Doubt. Almost from the start, the expedition went disastrously wrong. In Game 5, Wade shot 25 foul shots - as much as the entire Dallas team. In Game 6, he shot 21 more. For years, Dallas will be smarting over a foul call against Nowitzki in the waning seconds of game 5 - he barely touched Wade, but the refs awarded Wade the winning free throws. So yes, Wade's stats might be a bit inflated - but getting questionable foul calls was also...

...Still, there's reason to doubt that Hamas and Fatah will be able to keep up the good cheer. After years of struggle against Israel, the Palestinians are watching their leaders engage in a bitter fight with each other over power and control of the Palestinian Authority. It pits Abbas, a secular but weak moderate, who controls the presidency and has the backing of Israel and the international community, against Hamas, which won a majority in legislative elections last January, but has struggled to establish legitimacy, due in part to the cutoff in Western aid to its government. The violence...
