...Daimler-Benz Deutschland Über Detroit? In what is set to become the largest industrial merger in history, German luxury automaker Daimler-Benz announced Thursday it will effectively absorb America's No. 3 car firm, Chrysler. Daimler describes the deal as a "merger of equals," but there's no doubt about who the senior partner is here. Chrysler shareholders will receive just over half a share in the new company for every one share their Daimler counterparts get, and Chrysler chair Robert Eaton will lose his co-leadership position inside of three years...
...Even more egregious: Where Hubbell says the word "reality", Burton substitutes "Riady." A Freudian slip, no doubt. Burton's explanation? "When you've got 150 hours of tape and you've got to condense it down to an hour," he told reporters, "obviously you're going to do some things that some people are concerned about." Whether that will quell the demands for his resignation from the chairmanship remains to be seen...
Bronfman says the company (and presumably his image) has turned the corner. The music division, led by bands such as No Doubt and the Wallflowers, is performing well, and Universal is exploring the purchase of EMI, the British music label. His investment in another media company, Time Warner (TIME's parent company), has paid off. In February, Bronfman sold 15 million Time Warner shares for $64.38 each, or about $965 million, nearly double what he paid for them. Universal expects to open new theme parks in Florida and Japan in the next few years. When it comes to movies, however...
...first we were inclined to think of the tale of the teacher and her sixth-grade lover as mere daytime-television trash in the flesh--the teacher-pupil angle slipping a ghost of incest into the narrative, and no doubt a touch of mental illness. On the other hand, we have gone pretty far in exhausting the categories of the forbidden. The love that dare not speak its name has become public, ordinary and settled into domestic life, as wholesome as Fred MacMurray in a cardigan. The President's penis and its recreations are routinely discussed in public without much...
...other greenhouse gases, as many atmospheric scientists have contended? Or was the hot spell just a random, unexceptional fluctuation in the weather? A study published last week in Nature magazine by climatologist Michael Mann and colleagues from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, may help melt away any lingering doubt about global warming. The scientists developed what amounts to a time-traveling thermometer. Applying innovative statistical tools to reams of evidence gathered from ancient ice samples, tree rings and coral fragments, they effectively pushed the temperature record back more than 600 years. Conclusion: the three warmest years of the 1990s were...
