...would not be surprised to see it cut in half by Labor Day. Pat Caddell, Carter's pollster, told TIME editors at lunch last week that "we may come out of this convention less than ten points behind, and I would prefer to come out ten to 15 points down???far enough down where we are clearly the underdog and Reagan is clearly on top." In that case, he thinks, voters will focus on Reagan rather than Carter and will not like what they see: "On an ideological scale of one to seven, from very liberal to very conservative...

Last week it was Easter in February, and Nelson may have felt long, floppy ears growing out of his head. For when the votes were counted in New Hampshire Tuesday night, Reagan had turned the Republican race upside down???again. He did not just win in what had been billed as a neck-and-neck contest; he swamped Bush by more than 2 to 1, and with 50% of the ballots, collected as many votes...

Whenever Meany steps down???his current term runs until 1979, when he will be 85?his successor is just about certain to be AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Lane Kirkland, 56. Kirkland has a reputation as both an intellectual and a pragmatist. He vows that labor's political support in this fall's mid-term elections will be determined by how legislators voted on the labor-reform bill, rather than going blindly to Democrats. For example, in Illinois the AFL-CIO for the first time will aid the re-election campaign of Republican Senator Charles Percy, who voted...

Golfer Carol Mann is chatting with friends outside the clubhouse when a twelve-year-old girl walks up, politely clears her throat and asks for an autograph. Mann bends down???it's a long way from 6-ft. 3-in. Mann to fan?and talks softly as she writes. After several moments, the girl returns, wide-eyed, to waiting parents. Mann straightens and smiles. "Five years ago, little girls never walked up to tell me that they wanted to be a professional golfer. Now it happens all the time. Things are changing, things are changing...

Price rises for a few food items should soon begin to slow down???at least somewhat. The wholesale price of fruits and vegetables dropped 1.6% during May, and that should result in better prices for consumers by midsummer. That hardly means the problem is on the way to being solved. After revising its wishful-thinking January guesstimate, the Administration now forecasts a total 1978 food price rise of 8% to 10%, and with a bit of bad weather between now and year's end, even that figure may turn out to be too optimistic...
