...long ago, selling American cars in Japan was downright quixotic. The U.S. vehicles were known for lousy quality, high prices and crummy service. But no longer. Hisashi Honma, a 22-year-old salesman at a Ford dealership near Tokyo, can't get enough Mustangs, Tauruses and Mondeos for all the customers who want to buy them. One ordered a European-made Ford Mondeo wagon last month, even though he will have to wait three months for delivery. In May, Ford imported 2,500 of its muscular new Mustangs; they sold out in two months...

...many voters in the state of Washington, Thomas Foley's candidacy is not just unseemly -- it's downright disrespectful. In 1992, 60% of those voters gave a thumbs up to Initiative 573, a state referendum that imposes term limits on holders of state and federal offices. For Congressmen, the limit is three two-year terms over a 12-year period. Foley so vehemently disagrees with his constituents that he is not only seeking a 16th consecutive term in the House but has also filed a lawsuit challenging such limits on federal officeholders as unconstitutional. Thus far, the federal courts think...

...case, it's silly of Bernhard to attempt to undercut our criticism by predicting it. I personally would rather hear Bernhard sing than bitch any day, as she's gotten downright pathetic lately, but no doubt much of her public feels otherwise. It's not an unreasonable proposition that an entertainer should be entertaining, which Bernhard isn't when singing, though she's tuneful enough. Her response would probably be, Okay, then don't buy the CD (I got my copy free), but the fact is that someone who relies on public performance can't get too selfish, not even...

...Senate. The move failed by a 61-to-39 vote, with six Republicans defecting from the party line. One Democrat, Richard Shelby of Alabama, jumped ship and voted against the White House position. Clinton praised the Senate, but much of the action in the vaunted upper chamber was downright embarrassing. Among the notable lows: New York's Al D'Amato singing a barnyard song to rally the opposition. Expect a vote on the crime bill tomorrow or Saturday...

...seem to lose it in the final movements, but I had mostly given up by then. Another peculiarity that this recording shared with the Brahms release was the neartotal absence of the higher registers. As usual, Stern simply failed to get appreciable resonance from his instrument and was often downright tinny. Ax dominated the middle and lower registers, edging out Laredo and Ma in the process, and a lack of a suitable complement in the upper range gave this recording a disturbing hollow quality. Even Sony's 20-bit "Super Bit-Mapping" recording techniques didn't seem to make...
